Once a year, in the vast wilderness of Namaqualand in northern South Africa, the wilderness suddenly transforms into a flower garden for about three weeks from mid-August to early September, when the rains herald the arrival of spring.
During this time, approximately 4,000 species of plants grow in clumps. It is called the ``Garden of the Gods\'\' because of the vibrant orange Namaqualand daisy and other purple, white, and yellow flowers that compete with each other.
