The PowerBook 100 is a portable personal computer designed and manufactured by Sony for Apple, announced at the COMDEX computer expo in Las Vegas on October 21, 1991.
Sony designed and manufactured the PowerBook 100 in collaboration with Apple's Industrial Design Group.
Its design has been repeatedly recognized: in 2006, PC World ranked the PowerBook 100 as the 10th greatest PC of all time, and in 2005, U.S. Mobile PC named it the greatest gadget ever.
In late 1989, Apple approached Sony for development assistance, citing a lack of engineers to handle the new products planned for 1991.
Sony's engineers had little experience building PCs, but by halting other projects and prioritizing the PowerBook 100, they completed Apple's smallest and lightest machine within 13 months.

The design placing the pointing device and palm rest in front of the keyboard was also pioneered by the PowerBook 100 series.
